Breasts attract a lot of attention in popular media – but one thing you can’t see when looking at breasts is whether they are dense or not. Breast density refers to the appearance of breasts on a mammogram.

In this episode of Research Pulse, we learn more about breast density – what it is, what it isn’t and how it relates to breast cancer.

We speak to Associate Professor Wendy Ingman, Head of the Breast Biology and Cancer Unit in the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research, based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH). As one of Australia’s leading breast researchers, Wendy is passionate about improving the evidence and awareness around breast density.

About the researcher

In addition to her TQEH role at Central Adelaide Local Health Network, Wendy is Research Fellow at The University of Adelaide. Her research is supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council, National Breast Cancer Foundation, and The Hospital Research Foundation.

Wendy was a finalist in the 2024 Eureka Prize for Outstanding Mentor of Researchers

Wendy’s research is independent of BreastScreenSA, which reports on breast density during routine mammogram screening.
