Nursing education leaves a lasting legacy in SA and Timor Leste

Nurse Educator Joy Booth tell us about her passion for education, delivered through her roles in teaching nursing staff at Central Adelaide Local Health Network and upskilling health care workers in Timor Leste (also known as East Timor).

Joy has worked at the Royal Adelaide Hospital for more than 30 years. During that time she has has undertaken ten visits to East Timor with the Overseas Specialist Surgical Association of Australia, or OSSAA, to share her knowledge and skills to support our closest overseas neighbour.

Working in the Technical Suites at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Joy specialised in orthopaedics and trauma surgery. She spent 25 years as a senior instrument/circulating clinician before transitioning into leadership and education.

Joy has also served as Squadron Leader in the RAAF for 10 years, bringing her trauma surgery expertise to the military. After volunteering as nursing team leader for the SA medical team that travelled to Banda Aceh following the 2004 tsunami, she became involved with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in East Timor.

Joy's volunteer work was recognised with a humanitarian award at the 2019 SA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence awards.
